Twenty-five

Five hours had passed. Jerome was given pizza, ice cream, cookies, and orange juice by the hospital staff. Michael was at my bedside, along with a doctor who looked horror-struck every time he met my eyes and just kept flipping through some papers while frowning intensely.

“Look, really, I just want the bed and the blood,” Michael said for about the tenth time. “I will do the rest with your healers.”

“We’ve brought in every healer we have,” the doctor said. “I don’t know what more we can do.”

“Can you not say it like that?” I asked, trying not to sneer at him as fresh tears sprang to Jerome’s eyes. My mother was with us and kept trying to shove food down me too, but I was still too nauseous from Michael’s healing to eat.

“Michael, leave the poison,” Jerome said, standing up and putting a hand on my arm. “I know she can heal that on her own. You, though, might not survive it.”

“If I leave the poison,” Michael said, “her wings can’t heal. The spines will fall off on their own, and if she’s alone, she might still be in danger.”

“She won’t be alone,” Jerome said.

“They suck anyway,” I pointed out.

“But they were so pretty,” my mom argued.

“Yes, they were pretty, but very impractical for someone like me.” I said. “Maybe if they had come in like they were supposed to when I was a kid, it would be tragic, but they didn’t, and losing them is a blessing.”

“I won’t leave her side until they come off,” Jerome said. “I can immediately apply the salve and stop the bleeding as well as call an ambulance or call one of you.”

I had a half dozen broken bones that I didn’t feel because of the Stygian poison that was flowing through my body. Apparently, demons as powerful as Karadon carry it in their saliva. It would cause me to heal slower and I was going to lose my wings, but otherwise I was fine. Losing my wings was a good thing in my opinion. My father was still trying to deal with the demon boxes at the other three schools, which were decimated like Jerome’s. Azrael and Uriel had come back, and they were all trying to clean up the mess. The box at Jerome’s school wasn’t the only one to bring forth things that weren’t demons. Imps, shadow people, ghouls, and some of Leviathan’s monsters were all loose in the city because of the demon boxes. They were also all over the news. I watched a five-minute breaking news clip and saw a fallen god sucking up the water from the Mississippi under the Arch.

Stygian poison made a physical body go numb, which meant I wasn’t experiencing pain, but I was also unaware of where my feet were when I tried to stand. If I’d been human, it would have killed me, but I was only half human. Michael found trace amounts of Stygian poison in my body long before now because my connection to the Stygian caused me to produce small amounts of it.
